Wal-Mart’s 7 R’s of Sustainability
Remove – take out unnecessary components or materials
Reduce – "right-size" to fit the product and/or cut down on the materials in the packaging
Reuse – can the packaging be used again for the same or for a different purpose
Recycle – make packaging from recycled materials or materials that have an established recycling infrastructure
Renew – make the package out of renewable resources
Revenue – make it "cost neutral" to existing products
Read – educate yourselves on environmental issues
Scorecard Sections
Selling Unit Packaging Materials - All materials designed to leave the front of the store with the customer when purchased.
Transport Packaging Materials - The number of different materials designed to go out the back of the store after the customer purchases an item. For example: trays, dividers, tier sheets, bottom cap, top cap, layer trays, corner posts, stretch wrap.
Additional Information - Percentage of the packaging manufacturing facility which runs on renewable energy. Energy Efficiency gained from unique manufacturing innovations.
Scorecard Metrics
15% Greenhouse Gas Emissions- Total number of tons of Greenhouse Gas Emissions that were created in the production of this products packaging.
15% Evaluation of Materials- Score evaluating the primary and secondary material that was used in the packaging of product.
15% Product to Package Ratio- Scores how well the package size fits the product size. Total volume used by the product divided by the total inside volume of package.
15% Cube Utilization- Average of the selling unit and transport cube utilizations. Total volume used by the selling unit packaging divided by the total palletized unit.
10% Average Distance to Transport Material- Score representing the distance the packaging materials had to travel before reaching the packaging facility. The distance the material traveled before packaging occurred, and from the point where the package was made/converted to the point the product was added.
10% Recycled Content- Scores how well this package uses recycled content. Based on defined Material Values.
10% Recovery- Scores how re-usable the materials used in packaging are. Based on defined recovery values.
05% Renewable Energy to Power Each Facility- Extra credit for the use of renewable energy in the creation of packaging materials.
05% Innovation Different from Energy Standard- Extra credit for innovative energy saving production innovations.
