GE Consumer & Industrial, Division of General
Electric Corporation, asked Display Pack to design and produce a
single bulb package for their high-tech line of new Energy Smart®
LED Bulbs.
The package needed to envelop and protect the higher-priced LED bulb and showcase the actual product-not just a photo of the product. It also had to create a heightened benefit expectation of the LED bulb and look radically different than any other previous light bulb package, while having ample room to promote to and educate consumers as to features and benefits of the LED Bulb. Finally, in keeping with the product's sustainability features, the package needed to be "green." This included a design that would not use high heat during package assembly because of LED's heat adverse technology.

Design, engineering, tooling and manufacturing staffs came together find cost-smart solutions to the design, manufacturing and assembly challenges posed by GE's request.
They presented GE with eight different 3D concept renderings. GE selected a package design unlike any other light bulb package in the market. It not only allows for extremely secure and protective visual display of the actual product, but also for a considerate amount of graphic area for education and promotion.
It also meets all sustainability considerations and protects the bulb's heat-averse nature during the assembly process, as well as providing consumers with an easy opening package.
To safely secure the LED bulb and to minimize
capital tooling investment, our CAD engineers developed, with a
single tool, a mirrored, two-piece joined tray that serves as a
secure locked clamshell.
The outside printed package carton is elliptically designed with front and back curves meeting at the package's left and right side points, helping to create a tight edge, indicative of the different kind of technology represented by the package's contents. The package design also allows it to be hung from a retail store peg-hook or to stand on retailing shelves on its sturdy, wobble-free base.
The package closing flaps interlock providing for easy, heat-free assembly, secure closure, as well as easy package opening by the consumer. In addition, both the front and back of the package provide multiple areas for in-depth education and promotion of the product.
